The Environment Agency—Abu Dhabi (EAD) has issued violations against eight retail fish outlets for selling fish species during the breeding season, violating local environmental regulations. The outlets were found offering Longtail Silver Biddy, known locally as Badah, a species protected during its breeding cycle.
In a statement shared on Instagram, EAD emphasized that these retail practices directly contradict the environmental laws in place to safeguard marine life. The fishing and trade of Badah fish are prohibited during the breeding season to protect their reproductive processes and ensure the long-term sustainability of fish populations in the region.
The Longtail Silver Biddy is a commercially important species in the UAE, and the agency has established regulations to regulate fisheries in Abu Dhabi to preserve the ecological balance and sustain marine resources for future generations. EAD reiterated the significance of compliance with these regulations by all stakeholders in the fishing and seafood trade industries.
To support the ongoing environmental sustainability efforts, the agency stressed that all parties involved in the fish trade must follow established laws and practices that protect fish stocks and ensure a healthier marine ecosystem for the future.
EAD continues to monitor and enforce laws aimed at preserving the UAE’s marine biodiversity and ensuring that fishing practices remain in line with sustainability goals.
