Abu Dhabi Announces Free Driverless Taxi Experience with Smooth, Safe Rides

Abu Dhabi is officially stepping into the future of mobility, offering residents and visitors a ride like no other — in a fully autonomous, driverless taxi. The initiative, which currently runs across fixed routes from Yas Island to Zayed International Airport, has already captured the attention of many, including Khaleej Times, which recently took one of these futuristic cabs for a spin.

While the idea of a car driving itself without human control can sound nerve-wracking at first, passengers quickly realize that this new mode of transport is anything but stressful. Each ride begins with a safety operator seated inside, but once the autonomous mode is activated, the system takes over completely. Using LiDAR, GPS, cameras, and radar technology, the vehicle creates a real-time, 360-degree view of its surroundings. It reads traffic signs, detects obstacles, follows mapped routes, and makes decisions more accurately than most human drivers.

One of the most impressive aspects of the ride is how naturally and smoothly the vehicle performs. It accelerates gently, brakes in advance, follows lane markings precisely, uses turn signals appropriately, and even overtakes slower vehicles — all while maintaining a calm, measured approach. There’s no sudden braking or erratic swerving. Every move is calculated and safe, offering what many are calling a “new standard of driving.”

The system currently boasts a 99% accuracy rate, following road rules to perfection and keeping passengers safe throughout the ride. According to safety operators, most first-time riders are anxious at first but begin to enjoy the seamless nature of the ride within minutes. Many even forget they’re in a driverless car.

Adding to its appeal, the driverless taxi service is completely free of charge for now. Whether you’re commuting from Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, or heading to the airport, you won’t pay a dirham. Booking is as easy as downloading the TXAI app, registering, and choosing your pick-up and drop-off points. The app then connects you with available autonomous taxis in your area, just like a traditional ride-hailing app.

As the service expands and confidence in autonomous vehicles grows, these driverless taxis may soon be available without any human presence at all. The future is here — and it’s smarter, smoother, and safer.
