Fatwa Council Sets Zakat Al Fitr at Dh25

The UAE’s Council for Fatwa has announced the Zakat Al Fitr amount for Ramadan 2025, along with the expiation (kaffarah) amounts for those who miss fasts under various circumstances.

Zakat Al Fitr Guidelines:

For this year, Zakat Al Fitr has been set at Dh25 per person in cash or the equivalent of 2.5 kg of rice. This charitable contribution is meant to assist at least two individuals in need.
The payment of Zakat Al Fitr is obligatory for all Muslims—men, women, children, and the elderly—who have the financial means to contribute. It must be given before the end of Ramadan to ensure it reaches those in need on time.

Expiation (Kaffarah) for Missed or Broken Fasts:

The Fatwa Council has also specified expiration amounts for individuals who miss their fasts under different conditions:

1. Breaking a Fast Intentionally

    • Individuals who intentionally break their fast must pay Dh15 per person for 60 poor individuals, totaling Dh900.
    • Alternatively, they may choose to feed 60 people with 3.25 kg of wheat per person.

2. Unable to Fast

    • Those who are medically or physically unable to fast must pay Dh15 per person for each missed fasting day.
    • If opting to feed instead, they should provide 3.25 kg of wheat per day.

3. Missed Fasts Due to Death

    • If a person passes away with unfulfilled obligatory fasts, their close family members must compensate by either
      • Feeding the needy with 3.25 kg of wheat per missed fasting day, or
      • Paying Dh15 per missed day on their behalf.

4. Delaying Missed Fasts Without a Valid Reason

    • Those who fail to make up missed fasts without a valid excuse are required to pay Dh15 per day for each delayed fast.
    • Alternatively, they can donate 3.25 kg of wheat per day to those in need.

5. Taking an Oath While Fasting

    • If someone takes an oath during Ramadan knowing it is false, they must pay Dh15 to 10 poor individuals, totaling Dh150.
    • As an alternative, they may provide 3.25 kg of wheat per person to fulfill their obligation.

These regulations, issued by the Fatwa Council, ensure that those unable to fulfill their fasting obligations have clear guidelines for atonement while upholding the principles of charity and compassion during Ramadan 2025.
