IPL Suspended for One Week Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

The world’s richest cricket tournament began its current season on March 22, and the final fixture was scheduled to be played on May 25

India’s cricket board has decided to suspend the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 tournament for one week, the BCCI said in a statement on Friday.

Thursday’s IPL match was abandoned midway after fighting began in India’s border regions, but the cricket board attributed the disruption to a power failure at the stadium in the hill city of Dharamsala.

Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders,” the BCCI added in its statement. The suspension will come as a major setback for a Reliance-Disney joint venture which has broadcast rights for the matches, and also scores of companies who have commmitted millions of dollars for advertising.

After striking the $8.5-billion media merger with Walt Disney last year, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance was targeting small businesses and promoting unconventional neuroscience studies to boost its revenues from the IPL.

The world’s richest cricket tournament began its current season on March 22, and the final fixture was scheduled to be played on May 25, with matches being spread over 13 venues across the country.

“While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country,” said the BCCI.

The heightened tensions have taken its toll on the game in Pakistan as well as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday confirmed that the remaining fixtures of the HBL PSL X have been shifted to the UAE.

The last eight fixtures, which were previously scheduled in Rawalpindi, Multan and Lahore will now be staged in the UAE.
