Smart corridors, AI systems and robots: Aviation is about to get a dystopian makeover with airport of the future in Dubai Dubai’s Al Maktoum International (DWC) airport is set to transform travel with avant-garde technology that promises to make your journey simpler, smoother faster. Designed to be the fastest Customs process yet, visitors clear immigration in seconds with advanced AI and an automatic passport verification system. “The system allows 10 times more passengers than the traditional gates to pass through in the same time taken for one,” says Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA.
The tag line used during the announcement was “next generation of travel” and the airport will offer a series of stylish and high-tech features such as baggage dropped to an autonomous vehicle, which moves it straight to the check-in desk. Passengers will also benefit from smoother check-in desks, including luggage with e-tags and robotic help from curbside to gate. There’s also something along the lines of a “futuristic intelligent traffic management system” that would monitor vehicles in order to help airlines prepare for arriving passengers, with passengers able to choose from options such as a metro and even an eVTOL aircraft to get to the airport.
At the other end, baggage claim belts could be replaced by biometric enabled kiosks in the terminal, and suitcases could be delivered to homes by autonomous vehicles. To fend off any sensory overload, the airport will be filled with mixed-use spaces for passengers to decompress and shop, while providing special services to children, mothers and elderly passengers.
In DWC’s idea of future travel, terminals are smaller, more personal places underground where trains shuttle passengers to the above-ground terminals and technology and ease of use are paramount.
