UAE Launches First PhD Programme for AI Research

The UAE has launched its first PhD program focused on artificial intelligence (AI) research, marking a significant step in the country’s push for AI adoption. The program, offered by the University of Birmingham Dubai’s School of Computer Science, aims to equip AI candidates with both theoretical knowledge and practical application skills, targeting sectors like healthcare, regulatory frameworks, and cognitive cities.

Announced during Dubai AI Week 2025, the program aligns with the UAE’s progressive approach to AI innovation. Dr. Yusra Mouzughi, provost of the university, explained that the country is ahead of many others in AI adoption, and this PhD will help candidates address industry and government needs for further AI research and development.

The program lasts a minimum of three years, with candidates focusing on relevant research areas. Each student will work with at least two supervisors, one from Dubai and one from the UK. PhD candidates will gain knowledge in both AI theory and development, learning to implement their research across various sectors. Ethical approval will be required for all research projects, ensuring AI is applied responsibly.

Looking ahead, Dr. Mouzughi sees AI making a genuine impact on sectors like transportation, healthcare, and education. She emphasized the importance of AI competency across all fields, likening it to how Microsoft Word and Excel became essential tools in the past.

The program was officially launched in the presence of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Minister of Defense.
