UAE to Introduce Digital ID System with Facial Recognition

The UAE is set to eliminate the need for physical Emirates ID cards by introducing a new digital identification system that will use facial recognition and biometric technology. Expected to launch within a year, this innovative system will simplify service access across key sectors such as banking, healthcare, hospitality, and telecommunications, reducing reliance on traditional physical IDs.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) has already successfully rolled out e-Emirates IDs across many services, but further expansion is underway to cover essential sectors. During a Federal National Council (FNC) session, member Adnan Al Hammadi raised concerns about the continued use of physical IDs, which remain a barrier for residents accessing services. He highlighted the need for a more streamlined, digital approach to identity verification.

Currently, healthcare providers, banks, and hotels still require physical Emirates ID cards for transactions, appointments, and check-ins, despite the country’s advances in digital transformation. Al Hammadi stressed the urgency of fast-tracking the adoption of digital solutions to alleviate these challenges.

In response, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, confirmed that the authority is prioritizing the expansion of e-Emirates ID use. He also highlighted the successful implementation of the UAEPASS app, which enables users to access official digital documents securely on their phones.

The new digital ID system will leverage biometric and facial recognition technology to verify identities quickly and accurately. The system, accessible through the UAEPASS app, will offer a digital version of the Emirates ID, securely stored on users’ devices. The move will facilitate smoother access to services and enhance security across sectors, aligning with the UAE’s vision for a smart, connected future.

As the initiative progresses, the ICP will work closely with key stakeholders to refine the system and address challenges related to biometric identification. Efforts will also focus on ensuring compliance with data protection regulations to build public trust in the new technology.

With this move, the UAE is further solidifying its position as a leader in digital transformation and smart services, setting a global example for seamless, secure digital identities.
