The department emphasized that anyone found guilty of spreading information, including rumors, images, or news with the intent to harm the nation’s standing, could face significant penalties. These include a potential prison sentence of up to five years and a hefty fine that could reach Dh500,000.
This announcement follows a similar advisory from Abu Dhabi Police earlier in April, which urged the public to refrain from sharing false information and rumors that could harm the national interest. The advisory further clarifies that this includes any type of content—whether it’s visual images, data, or news—that may ridicule or degrade the UAE’s authorities or its national institutions.
The authorities are particularly focused on the damaging effects of misinformation on social media platforms. They highlighted that the spread of unethical or anti-social content could lead to legal repercussions for individuals, with fines as high as Dh1 million in addition to imprisonment, depending on the severity of the offense. Social media users are reminded to fact-check any news before sharing it and to maintain the safety and dignity of everyone involved. 
Legal experts are also emphasizing the role of social media in fostering a tolerant and respectful society. The UAE has long promoted values of tolerance, coexistence, and respect for cultural diversity. Violating these values, especially in the public domain, will not be tolerated under UAE law.
