UAE Condemns Sudanese Armed Forces’ Disinformation Campaign at the UN

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has strongly condemned the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) for utilizing the platform of the United Nations (UN) to spread disinformation, a move it deems as harmful and unacceptable in the context of the ongoing Sudanese crisis.

In a formal communication to the UN Security Council, the UAE Mission expressed deep concern over the SAF’s actions, accusing the military of manipulating the findings of the UN Panel of Experts’ report to further their disinformation agenda. This misuse of the Council’s platform to distort facts was described as a dangerous precedent that threatens the integrity of international diplomacy and undermines efforts toward peace and stability in Sudan.

The UAE’s statement comes at a time when the international community is increasingly alarmed by the escalating conflict in Sudan. The UAE delegation pointed out that this tactic of misinformation only diverts attention from the true issues at hand, primarily the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and a resolution to the ongoing hostilities.

The Growing Concern of International Misinformation

Disinformation has become a significant challenge in the context of global conflicts, with numerous nations leveraging international forums to manipulate narratives that benefit their political and military interests. The UAE’s response is a stark reminder of how misinformation can be weaponized to sway international opinion, derail peace efforts, and prolong suffering for civilians caught in the crossfire.

The UAE emphasized that the UN Security Council should not become a venue for the promotion of biased or manipulated reports that fail to reflect the reality on the ground. Instead, the Council’s mandate should focus on addressing the humanitarian crisis and finding ways to bring about a ceasefire and sustainable peace. The UAE reiterated that it is crucial for the international community to resist any attempts to use the UN platform for political gains that impede meaningful dialogue and peaceful resolution.

Peace and Humanitarian Access Must Be the Priority

Further elaborating on the issue, the UAE urged the SAF to abandon its efforts to manipulate global narratives and instead focus on the actual needs of the Sudanese people. The country called on the SAF to prioritize the following actions:

  1. Achieving a Ceasefire: It is imperative that all parties involved in the conflict agree to a ceasefire to halt the loss of life and provide a foundation for peace negotiations.
  2. Facilitating Humanitarian Aid: The UAE stressed the importance of ensuring that humanitarian aid reaches those in dire need across Sudan. Blockades and restricted access to aid should be lifted immediately to save lives.
  3. Engaging in Peace Talks: The UAE urged the Sudanese Armed Forces to enter peace negotiations with a clear objective: transitioning to a civilian-led government that is independent of military control.

The UAE’s call for a peaceful resolution to the conflict underscores the importance of holding accountable those responsible for human rights violations and ensuring that Sudan’s future is shaped by its people, not by military forces attempting to maintain power through violence and misinformation.

Conclusion: A Path to a Civilian-Led Sudan

In conclusion, the UAE’s statement serves as a powerful reminder that the UN Security Council and other international bodies must remain vigilant against manipulating their platforms for political gain. The UAE’s message is clear: the focus should be on humanitarian relief, a ceasefire, and a political transition that puts Sudan’s future in the hands of its citizens.

By calling for peace talks and prioritizing the needs of Sudanese civilians, the UAE advocates for a peaceful, inclusive, and civilian-led government that can guide Sudan toward stability. The international community must stand united in its commitment to helping Sudan achieve peace, ensuring that disinformation campaigns are swiftly addressed and that Sudan’s path to recovery is unhindered.
