UAE Lowers Minimum Driving License Age to 17: Teens Eager to Drive

The UAE has officially lowered the minimum age for obtaining a driving license, allowing 17-year-olds to register for permits starting March 29. This new regulation, introduced through a federal traffic law announced in October, takes effect at the end of March, enabling teenagers to gain independence behind the wheel earlier than before.

Previously, the minimum age to obtain a driving license for cars and light vehicles was 18, but this shift allows those turning 17 to apply for a license, creating a buzz among the youth.

Excited 17-year-old twins Rhea and Rohan Nihalani, who celebrated their birthdays in November, are eagerly awaiting the change. They’ve even turned the license registration process into a friendly competition, each hoping to be the first to secure their license. “Whoever wins gets to drive our parents’ car and, of course, bragging rights,” Rhea said. “Once I have my license, I plan to drive myself to the beach for surfing and maybe even school. I can’t wait to have the freedom to go places without bothering my parents.”

Rohan, who is a frequent metro user, is excited to drive himself to places that public transport can’t reach. “I can’t wait to drive to locations where the metro doesn’t go and take my friends out for drives. Even a simple fast-food drive-through would be wonderful,” he shared.

While the twins are thrilled about the newfound freedom, Rhea expressed that she’s not concerned about being among the youngest to drive on UAE roads. “I’ll be learning from experienced instructors and will take the RTA driving test. So, safety concerns are not something I worry about,” she said.

Amaan Mohiddina, who turns 17 this April, is also eagerly awaiting the chance to register for his license. For him, driving is not only about independence but also responsibility. “I’ve always loved cars, but learning to drive means becoming more self-reliant,” Amaan explained. “I want to drive my younger sister to school and help my parents with school runs. I’m also looking forward to road trips with my friends, without relying on taxis or public transport.”

While excited, Amaan remains cautious and understands the responsibility of driving. “I know that driving in the UAE requires discipline and awareness. I’m focused on taking my lessons seriously and becoming a safe driver from Day 1,” he said.

Although many teens are eager to begin their driving journey, driving schools are still awaiting further details from the Dubai Road and Transport Authority (RTA). Fatima Raees, Director of Customer Experience and Marketing at Emirates Driving Institute, mentioned that they’ve received numerous inquiries regarding the new law. However, they have not yet received specific instructions from the RTA regarding changes to the registration process.

“We’ve had a surge in questions from parents and teens about eligibility for the 17-year-old driving license. However, we haven’t received any official directives from the RTA yet,” Raees stated. “For now, the process remains unchanged. Applicants will still need to take mandatory driving classes and pay the regular fees.”

Raees also clarified that while 17-and-a-half-year-olds can register for lessons and even pass their driving test, they will only receive their license once they turn 18.

The new regulation offers a great opportunity for young drivers in the UAE to enjoy the benefits of early independence on the road, but it also comes with added responsibility. The RTA and driving schools are working on providing a smooth process for these enthusiastic drivers.
