UAE Proposes Early Retirement for Citizens with AI-Replacable Jobs

In a progressive move to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for the future of work, the UAE is considering an early retirement scheme for Emiratis whose jobs are likely to be replaced by AI technologies. This proposal is part of the government’s broader efforts to embrace AI, boost productivity, and empower the workforce to adapt to emerging technologies.

Rather than being a threat to employment, AI is proving to be a valuable tool that helps enhance human productivity. It supports employees by automating repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on more complex and creative work. Omar Al Olama, the UAE’s Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, explained that the fear of job losses due to AI has been overstated. AI has expanded job opportunities by creating new roles and increasing efficiency in existing ones.

In 2017, many experts predicted that AI would replace 40% of jobs by 2025, leading to widespread unemployment. However, these predictions have not materialized. Instead, the UAE has seen workers benefiting from AI, with significant improvements in productivity and job satisfaction. The country’s focus is now on preparing its workforce for the future by upskilling employees and enabling them to apply AI and emerging technologies in their daily tasks.

For those nearing retirement age, particularly in roles that could soon be automated, the government is considering offering early retirement options. This would allow older workers to leave the workforce gracefully, while AI fills the gaps in their positions. This initiative aims to ensure that individuals can transition smoothly into the next phase of their lives without the stress of job displacement.

Additionally, the UAE is working on a new fund aimed at empowering Emiratis to participate in the AI industry, whether by upskilling or transitioning to new roles created by technological advancements. This fund is expected to help workers whose jobs are at risk of being replaced by AI, ensuring they are not left behind in the rapidly changing job market.

Several other initiatives are being rolled out to ensure that the UAE’s workforce remains competitive and ready for the digital age. The focus is not just on replacing human workers but also on creating new opportunities and enhancing productivity across various sectors.

As AI continues to reshape industries globally, the UAE stands at the forefront of embracing this transformation, seeking to build a future where both technology and people thrive together.
