Sheikh Sultan Opens New Buildings at Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services

His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurating new buildings at the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) as the city nears its 50th anniversary. While attending the ceremony, Sheikh Sultan thanked Sheikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SCHS, for her keenness to establish the City of Sharjah and preside over it, especially after her study and scientific specialisation in the field in the United States.

“A brand new 100,000-square-meter facility in the Barashi area is being utilized as part of the first phase of SCHS’ expansion plans,” the CHRS said. The plan seeks to develop a cohesive, comprehensive community that serves a diverse population and has the educational and rehabilitative services to support those living with disabilities. Expressing satisfaction over the facilities, Sheikh Sultan praised the preconceived design and the most-coveted modern facilities provided, and evolved to suit the requirements of the city beneficiaries.

He also drew attending to the advancement made in the resolution took on complex medical and therapeutic cases and called for the city’s space to be extended, especially along the Emirates Road. That expansion, he added, should also offer treatment centers and housing for its workforce so that staff members have easy access to the campus.

Sheikh Sultan also ordered the development of a new part next to the city and the establishment of edifices for offering services for treatment of some of the physical defects directly aiming at promoting the city’s levels in line with international standards. He was confident about the city’s future given the demand for services – and reflected on the ongoing success of Sheikha Jameela and her team in setting the standards for the city as a leader in the field of services for people with disabilities.

As he toured the new facilities, Sheikh Sultan stopped at the Sharjah Autism Centre, where specialised services for those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are provided. He watched various teaching classes like arts, music, and life skills and met the staffs and the children as well. The 120-seater centre is in line with the best-in-class global standards and offers safety and inclusivity to help children learn.

He also went to Al Wafa School for Capacity Development, which caters for 352 students with intellectual disabilities. The school provides special programs and services such as Therapy Rooms and is an inclusive school for all types of learners. He was amazed by the all-around support offered by the school, creating an environment that all students could excel in.

The second phase of SCHS’ growth will also offer new services, including the Early Intervention Centre for children aged 0-5 and the Al Amal School for the Deaf, which will cater for educational support for the deaf and hard of hearing. It also comprises the Masarat Centre for Development and Empowerment which provides vocational training and independent living skills to youth with disabilities, Independent Living Units, which is a regional project that is the first of its kind in the region that will serve adults with disabilities living independently.

Sheikha Jameela thanked Sheikh Sultan for his constant backing for the disabled. She added that the new buildings are an achievement for SCHS that encapsulates a “fountain of success” for Sharjah and the UAE at large. She added that the city is committed to following the best world practices in the rehabilitation and education of people with disabilities that will ensure the highest quality of services for people with disabilities.

SCHS has grown dramatically since it started in 1979, and today has 13 specialized centers and branches including ones in Khorfakkan, Al Dhaid and Kalba. The city remains in the forefront as the best place for people of determination, showcasing exemplary practices beyond the UAE, the Arab region and the world at large.
