Abu Dhabi Promotes Pedestrian and Micromobility Safety at UN Global Road Safety Week
Abu Dhabi, a prominent participant in the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, demonstrated its strong commitment to promoting road safety through a series of community-focused activities organized by the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility), which is affiliated with the Department of Municipalities and Transport. This initiative highlights the emirate’s ongoing efforts to improve transportation safety for all, especially pedestrians and cyclists, as part of its broader strategy for a safer, more inclusive transport system.
The central theme for this year’s Global Road Safety Week was “#MakeWalkingSafe #MakeCyclingSafe,” which aimed to raise awareness on pedestrian safety and the responsible use of micromobility solutions. Abu Dhabi Mobility’s participation in the campaign underscores the importance of partnerships and community outreach to foster safer road practices across the emirate.
Engaging the Community in Safety Awareness
Throughout the week, Abu Dhabi Mobility organized several on-the-ground activities aimed at raising awareness among different community groups. These initiatives focused on pedestrian safety and the responsible use of micromobility, such as e-scooters and bicycles, which have become increasingly popular in urban environments. The activities sought to encourage safer mobility behaviors, such as using designated pedestrian crossings and practicing responsible micromobility habits. These efforts are essential in achieving sustainable, long-term improvements in road safety.
Engineer Abdulla Hamad Al Eryani, the Acting Executive Director of the Planning and Strategic Affairs Sector at Abu Dhabi Mobility, highlighted the importance of real-world engagement to bring about lasting change in road behaviors. He emphasized that road safety initiatives must be continuous, involving clear and relatable messaging to have a genuine impact on public habits.
“We believe that continuous awareness and effective coordination with partners are key to embedding safety into everyday mobility practices,” said Al Eryani. “Sustained engagement is critical to achieving a significant shift in behaviors.”
Collaboration with Abu Dhabi Police for a Safer Road Culture
Abu Dhabi’s participation in Global Road Safety Week also saw the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police reinforcing its commitment to road safety. Brigadier General Mahmoud Youssef Al Baloushi, Director of the Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols, shared insights on the police’s strategic efforts to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety.
He urged pedestrians to strictly use designated crossing areas like pedestrian bridges and tunnels, and avoid distractions such as using mobile phones while crossing roads. Furthermore, drivers were reminded to prioritize pedestrians, especially in school and residential areas, as part of their duty to protect lives and maintain community security.
“Compliance with traffic laws is a shared responsibility,” stated Brigadier General Al Baloushi. “By respecting pedestrian rights and being vigilant, we can significantly reduce accidents and ensure a safer environment for all.”
Abu Dhabi’s Vision for Safe, Sustainable Mobility
The initiatives during the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week represent Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to not only improve road safety but also to cultivate a culture of mutual respect and responsibility among both pedestrians and drivers. This program is a vital step towards building a future where the emirate’s transportation system is safer, more inclusive, and forward-thinking.
By encouraging both drivers and pedestrians to adopt safer practices, Abu Dhabi is paving the way for a transportation system that can handle future challenges while promoting sustainability and safety.
