Abu Dhabi Police have sounded the warning that road shoulders are not to be used for general traffic and drivers must confine their moving violations on to roads for regular vehicles, adding that yellow road shouldered are restricted to emergency use only. Passing or using the shoulder to drive is an infraction that puts people’s lives in danger and hinders the flow of traffic, the officials said.
Video: Dangerous overtaking from the left Video uploaded to social media by Abu Dhabi Police shows a motorist driving dangerously close behind another vehicle and overtaking from the left shoulder while failing to leave sufficient space between the two cars in what would potentially have caused serious accidents. The practice is perilous for both the driver and other road users.
The road shoulder is supposed to perform a valuable function: It allows emergency vehicles — ambulances, police cars, fire trucks — to zoom through and reach people in desperate situations. People that are injured who need help now can also use it. In most cases, however, the non-emergency use of the shoulder for passing or for other activities off-limits to other vehicles is not only illegal, but highly unsafe.
Abu Dhabi Police To assert this fact, Abu Dhabi Police have said that drivers travelling on the road shoulder will be fined AED 1,000 and slapped with six traffic points. They also ask all drivers to respect the emergency stopping areas and to always consider safety on the roads.
This is one of many steps that Abu Dhabi Police is taking to cut down on traffic infractions and make the road safer for everyone. Motorists are urged to be mindful and to obey traffic laws in order to avoid incidents and maintain the safety of the road for all.
